I always try to answer the phone when I see “Big Bob” Listen calling. Sure glad I did. All he said was, “There’s a project here you’d like. A true breeding piece. He’s probably not a show winner even if he were in a class by himself, but he has generating parts you don’t find every day.” I responded, “Fair enough.” Later that day, he was headed to SAVAGE. Truthfully, I knew almost nothing about what we had bought. I didn’t know the pedigree. I didn’t know the history. We bought him strictly because of the pieces we were told he possessed. Once DOIN’ BUSINESS arrived and we started digging deeper, things became very interesting. Visually, he is a tall-shouldered, beautifully balanced Hampshire boar with elite structural integrity. His angles are ideal, his feet are exceptional, his toe spread is tremendous, and his ankles are massive. He carries a fat, hairy tail set high off his hip. His skull, eye, and ear all read like a true generator, supported by dense, coarse hair. From behind, he is incredibly impressive. His hip is long and deep, square about his pins, and attached to one of the biggest hind legs you’ll find in the breed. So what’s wrong with him? Not much. He’s simply not the fleshy-built type some people prefer, and he likely won’t be the highest-performing boar for those focused solely on that metric. He’ll never be the extra-big outlined, extra-tall kind that some programs chase. What he does offer is perfect proportion, elite build, unbelievable structural correctness, and the unmistakable look of a true breeding hog, as the old-school breeders would say. Yet the most intriguing part of DOIN’ BUSINESS may be his pedigree. We took a deep dive into his genetic profile and were blown away by what we found. It was refreshing to study a pedigree that looked completely different from what we’ve been using. The amount of influential sires, proven sow families, and respected breeders represented in this boar is simply incredible. His sire, CHOSEN ONE, stands at Power Point Boar Stud. The most fascinating part of the pedigree, however, is the maternal side, which traces through seven consecutive generations of production females raised by Tom Knauer & Family. The genetic profile reads like a who’s who of Hampshire breed history. Leading off is the BAT-winning Hog College son of IRON CLAD that sired his mother. Behind him are breed-changing generators including LETHAL, WORLD CLASS, GRAND ENTRANCE, UNFINISHED BUSINESS, JL STRUTS 24-4, and STOP THE MADNESS. He didn’t come with a hype video. He wasn’t a high seller. He didn’t win a pig show. What he does possess are all the ingredients necessary to become the type of herd sire capable of producing all of the above. He’ll get every opportunity imaginable, being bred to some of the best Hampshire sows in the industry.
